How We’re Reducing Waste—and How You Can Too

With Earth Day here, it’s a meaningful time to reflect on the small, everyday choices that can make a lasting impact. As a company rooted in supporting families and intentional living, we believe caring for our health and caring for the environment often go hand in hand. We’re committed to finding thoughtful ways to reduce, reuse, and recycle within our daily operations, and we hope by sharing what that looks like for us, it might inspire a few simple changes you can make at home, too.

How We Reduce Waste as a Small Business

Reusing Through Our Elderberry Syrup Refillery

One of our favorite sustainability initiatives is our Elderberry Syrup Refillery, created for our local community.

Here’s how it works:

  • Bring in your clean, empty elderberry syrup jar

  • We refill it with freshly made elderberry syrup

  • You give your jar a second (or third) life

  • Receive $2 off your refill

  • Your in-store 10% discount still applies

It’s a simple way to make a more eco-friendly choice part of your regular routine!

Composting Our Elderberry Mash

After making our elderberry syrup, we’re left with elderberry mash — and instead of discarding it, we compost it. This returns valuable nutrients back to the soil and helps reduce food waste.

Composting is one way we try to honor the full lifecycle of the ingredients we use. If you’re interested in learning more, we’ve previously shared how we’ve used elderberries in composting and worm castings as part of this process.

Producing in Thoughtful Quantities

Reducing waste starts long before a product reaches your hands. We’re intentional about producing in smaller, thoughtful batches to avoid overproduction and unnecessary waste.

This approach helps us maintain product freshness while minimizing excess — especially when working with fresh, perishable ingredients. It’s a balance we continue to refine as we grow.

Recycling Everyday Materials

Behind the scenes, daily operations involve a lot of materials — especially cardboard from shipments and supplies. We make it a priority to recycle as much as possible, with cardboard being one of the most common materials we handle.

While it may seem like a small effort, consistently recycling these materials helps reduce the amount of waste that ends up in landfills.

Always Learning and Improving

Sustainability is an ongoing process. As a small business, we’re constantly learning and looking for new ways to improve our sustainability efforts — whether that’s through better packaging, more efficient processes, or new ideas we haven’t implemented yet. We don’t claim to have it all figured out, but we are committed to doing better where we can and continuing to make progress over time.

How to Reduce Waste at Home (Simple, Realistic Tips)

Reducing waste at home doesn’t require a complete lifestyle overhaul. In fact, the most sustainable habits are the ones you can stick with long-term. Starting small and staying consistent often makes the biggest difference.

Choose Simple, Sustainable Swaps

Sustainability doesn’t have to be all or nothing. Instead of aiming for perfection, focus on small swaps that fit naturally into your daily routine.

A few easy ways to reduce waste at home:

  • Use a reusable water bottle instead of single-use plastics

  • Switch to refillable containers for pantry staples

  • Bring reusable shopping bags when running errands

  • Buy in bulk for frequently used items to reduce packaging

Reuse What You Already Have

One of the easiest ways to reduce waste is by reusing what you already have. Before throwing something away, take a moment to ask: Can I use this one more time? Often, the answer is yes.

Some practical ideas:

  • Reuse elderberry syrup jars for smoothies, overnight oats, or pantry storage

  • Repurpose supplement bottles for snacks, travel containers, or small item storage

  • Save shipping boxes for storage, organization, or future use

We’re often asked if we take back used elderberry syrup jars. Due to storage limitations and health considerations, we aren’t able to accept returns — but we strongly encourage reusing or recycling them at home. There are many creative ways to give them a second life. If you’re looking for ideas, we’ve shared more in our blog: Seven Sustainable Ways to Recycle Our Jars.

Recycle the Right Way

Recycling is one of the most common ways to reduce household waste, but doing it correctly makes a difference.

Keep these simple tips in mind:

  • Rinse containers before placing them in the recycling bin

  • Check local recycling guidelines, as they vary by location

  • Remember that not all materials are recyclable

Sustainability doesn’t come from one big change, it’s built through small, consistent choices over time. For us, that looks like reusing jars through our refillery, composting leftover ingredients, and producing in thoughtful batches. At home, it can be as simple as reusing containers or being more mindful about what gets thrown away.

We’d love to hear how you’re reducing waste in your own home. Share your ideas, tips, or creative ways you’ve repurposed items with us — your inspiration might help someone else take their first step, too!

When businesses and families both take small steps toward reducing waste, those efforts add up. And over time, those everyday choices can create a meaningful impact — for your home, your health, and the world around you. 🌎
